From Plate to Programs: How Your Support Builds Child Safety Across Indiana

Behind every “KIDS FIRST” license plate is a powerful ripple effect: awareness, funding, and life-saving support that benefits children and families across Indiana. Let’s trace the impact from that plate on your car to prevention programs in your community.

License Plates: A Symbol of Change

The “KIDS FIRST” plate debuted in 1995 and has since been a beacon of support. Every renewal contributes $40 to the Trust Fund—ensuring steady, sustainable funding for prevention work.

Where the Money Goes

The Indiana Kids First Trust Fund channels funds into:

  1. Grants for Community Programs
    • Prevent Child Abuse Indiana/The Villages: Public education, parenting resources, and statewide awareness campaigns.
    • Community Partners for Child Safety (CPCS): In-person support for at-risk families, tailored to community needs.
  2. Building a Strong Prevention Network
    • Funding supports local Child Abuse Prevention Councils, equips professionals, and provides resources year-round—peaking impact during April’s Prevention Month.

Governance & Transparency

Created by statute, the Kids First Trust Fund Board includes members from the Indiana General Assembly, Governor’s office, Department of Child Services, and Department of Health. They meet quarterly to approve projects, set priorities, and manage a strategic budget.

In 2021, SB 137 empowered the Board to create a 501(c)(3) nonprofit subsidiary to pursue private donations—expanding support beyond plate sales. This subsidiary must publish annual reports, meeting minutes, and be audited annually—ensuring accountability.

Your Role: Make an Impact

  • Choose the Plate: Add or renew the plate to keep funding flowing.
  • Donate: Contributions through DCS Prevention Team are tax-deductible and directly support prevention.
  • Spread the Word: Once you have your plate, share your commitment. Encourage friends to join the movement.

Real Results, Real Hope

Each plate and donation helps fund parenting workshops, outreach campaigns, and family support groups—breaking the cycle before abuse begins. Thanks to KFTF, Indiana is stronger and safer.

Together, by putting kids first, we build healthier families, safer communities, and brighter futures for all Hoosier children.
