Every day across Indiana, families and children face challenges that can escalate into abuse or neglect. The Kids First Trust Fund (KFTF), established by Indiana Code IC 31‑26‑4, is dedicated to stopping these issues before they begin—investing in prevention to build stronger, healthier communities.
What We Do
- Primary Prevention: These programs serve the entire community—working proactively to prevent problems through universal awareness, education, and support. They include campaigns during Child Abuse Prevention Month and distribution of educational resources via Prevent Child Abuse Indiana (a division of The Villages).
- Secondary Prevention: Targeted to at-risk families—these prevent issues from taking root by connecting families with vital resources and support before crisis occurs. Community Partners for Child Safety leads these efforts, offering key services across all regions of Indiana.
How We’re Funded
- Originating from the creation of the “KIDS FIRST” specialty license plate in January 1995, the fund relies heavily on sales of this plate. State law officially named it the Kids First Trust Fund in 2003.
- Funds also come from state appropriations, interest earned on investments, and private donations—including a nonprofit subsidiary created in 2021 to further amplify fundraising efforts.
Who We Help
The Trust supports Hoosier families statewide by granting resources to local organizations that deliver life‑changing services—from new parent education to community support groups. Collaboration is key: parents, professionals, and local councils work together to weave a safety net of prevention.
How You Can Help
- Buy or Renew a “KIDS FIRST” License Plate: For an extra $40 at renewal, your plate contributes directly to prevention programming.
- Make a Direct Donation: You can donate online or by check to the Kids First Trust Fund via the Indiana DCS Prevention Team.
- Support Our Community Partners: Advocate for prevention, volunteer, or help spread awareness during Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Why It Matters
Preventing abuse and neglect is not just compassionate—it’s cost-effective. Programs funded by KFTF save taxpayer dollars by reducing the need for intensive intervention. Most importantly, they help children thrive in a safe and nurturing environment.
